Heat Pump Rebates Are Finally Here for Condos
For years, condo owners have felt like the last kid picked for the rebate team — watching detached homes score thousands in heat pump incentives while strata residents got left on the sidelines.
But that’s finally changing.
There are now two new rebates available for heat pump installations in condos and apartments:
Up to $3,000 from CleanBC
Up to $4,000 from BC Hydro
You can apply to one or the other, depending on your setup — but not both.
And while heat pumps are the focus, there’s also a rebate of up to $1,000 if you’re upgrading your electric water heater to a heat pump model.
If you’ve been waiting for your turn, this is it.
Who These Rebates Are For
These programs are designed for people living in condos, co-ops, or rental apartments — multi-unit buildings where each unit has its own electric heating and water system.
To qualify, your home must:
Have an active BC Hydro residential account
Use electric baseboard heat or a hard-wired electric water tank
Be a primary residence (either yours or your tenant’s)
Be income- and home value-qualified
Receive strata approval for the installation
We know strata approvals can take a while — the good news is that many stratas are getting on board more quickly these days.
And the double good news? We’ve helped homeowners through this process before and can support you with the technical details and documentation your strata might ask for.
(Side note: Townhomes aren’t eligible under these particular programs — but they’ve already been covered under previous rebate streams.)
Heat Pump Rebates (CleanBC or BC Hydro)
Both of these rebates help cover the cost of a cold-climate air-source heat pump, but you can only apply to one:
CleanBC Grant – up to $3,000
Designed for homeowners replacing electric heating systems with an eligible cold-climate heat pump.
BC Hydro Rebate – up to $4,000
Offers a slightly higher rebate, with a separate application and approval process.
No matter which one you choose:
The system must replace an electric heating system (like baseboards)
It must be the primary heat source for your home
At least one indoor head must serve a main living area
It must meet cold-climate performance standards
The install must be completed by a licensed HPCN contractor
Also Available: Water Heater Rebate
If you’re planning to replace your electric water heater, there’s a rebate of up to $1,000 when you switch to a qualified heat pump model.
What the Process Looks Like
This isn’t a buy-first, get-money-later situation — there’s a step-by-step process:
Request a pre-qualification code from BC Hydro
Get strata approval (we’ll help with that)
Your contractor submits a quote and project registrationYou apply for the rebate through the program website
10% of the time BC Hydro does a site visit to confirm eligibility
Everything needs to meet code and program requirements — but we’ll make sure you’re covered.
